About 4.9 million young people were living with HIV in developing countries in 2008: 3.23 million young women and 1.64 million young men [Map] Unsafe practices by injecting drug users, sex workers and men having sex with men fuel the HIV epidemic in most countries, regardless of epidemic type [Chart]     In most sub-Saharan African countries, young women 15–24 years old are about 2–4 times more likely to be infected with HIV than young men of the same age [Chart]     Young women with sexual partners 10 or more years older than themselves are 2–4 times more likely to be infected than young women with partners of the same age or 1 year older [Chart]
